Starting Reception

Our ‘Starting Reception’ definition* sets out the personal, social, emotional and physical skills that most children will develop by the time they start school.

The definition has been created to help parents, caregivers, and the early years professionals involved in looking after young children get them ready to start school.

We encourage all parents and any organisations working with children and families across the UK to use this definition in their work so all children start school ready for their first day.

*We are calling this document the ‘Starting Reception’ definition. Some people/organisations refer to this as ‘school readiness’.
